With an investment of US$ 2.5 billion, this new project aims to provide energy to mining companies in the southern region.
Within the context of the launch of PERUMIN 37 in Lima, at Mining Thursday, an event organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP), the regional governor of Arequipa, Rohel Sánchez, announced that Arequipa will be home to the largest green hydrogen plant in South America, with an estimated investment of US$ 2.5 billion.
Sánchez noted that the Arequipa region has reserved 16,000 hectares for the creation of a renewable energy industrial park, aimed at attracting private investment for the development of clean energy. "Arequipa will have the largest green hydrogen plant in South America, which will provide this renewable energy to the mining industry," said the governor.
This project will not only benefit mining but will also establish Arequipa as an international port reference. He also revealed that during the last Regional State Council, it was agreed to promote the development of the Las Américas megaport project, located on the Pacific coast. "We are inviting private investors to participate in this initiative, which has the potential to boost the region's economy," added Sánchez at the IIMP event.
The governor also highlighted the importance of events like PERUMIN 37, the largest mining convention in the country and Latin America, which will take place in the city of Arequipa from September 22 to 26, 2025, in strengthening Peru's image as a key player in the mining and energy industries. He emphasized that, in addition to economic benefits, these projects will contribute to sustainable development and tourism growth in the region.
"We promote the presence of PERUMIN 37 because Arequipa is the center of the mining corridor. Our region is home to several mining operations, some in production and others in development. This event is key to showcasing the investment potential we have, and each edition generates a significant economic impact," concluded Sánchez.
