  • According to the results of Brújula Minera Latam 2022, 70% of Peruvians believe that mining can build consensus with communities.
  • During 2023, the conflicts that have been recorded have not ended in attacks, but in threats, as compared to 2022.

During his presentation at the virtual event Road to PERUMIN "Challenges of Social Conflict Management", the founding partner of Wiñaq, Franco Olcese, pointed out that in order to improve social conflict at a business and institutional level, it is necessary to analyze several areas for improvement.

"Permanent communication, response to direct grievances, internal improvements and trust in institutions are points that need to be addressed at both the public and private level to improve social conflict among stakeholders," Olcese said.

In this regard, the specialist also stressed that social legitimacy in the mining sector must be considered, as it is multidimensional and has several vulnerable sides, including the population, which often has a balanced position.

"According to the results of Brújula Minera Latam 2022, prepared at the Latin American Mining Meeting, 70% of Peruvians believe that mining can build consensus with communities. In addition, it is important to emphasize that 43% of those surveyed say that mining has a positive impact on the country," he added.

Social Conflict in Peru

Olcese emphasized that there are four conditions for conflict: incentives, drivers, internal failures and public opinion, which provide social legitimacy to mining activity.

"We must keep in mind that there are several variables that are within these conditions. One of the main ones is the fulfillment of commitments, not only by companies, but also by public institutions", said Wiñaq's founding partner.

Likewise, he detailed that of the 13 conflicts that ended in attacks on mining operations during 2022, some are still latent. However, during 2023, such attacks were no longer direct, but threats.
