This 2023, the collaborative innovation program PERUMIN Hub will have a new and important proposal: a new line of work called Jóvenes que transforman (Young People Who Transform.) The goal is to engage young students from universities and technical schools so that they can contribute with solutions to the development of the national mining industry.
According to the organizers, this tour will give priority to regions mainly focused on mining, where people will be informed about the details of this new PERUMIN HUB proposal and the requirements to apply through innovation workshops for young people who show an interest.
The tour will begin on March 30, when the main challenges each region faces will be presented. Some of the universities that have confirmed their participation in this initiative are the PUCP, UNI, UNAM, UNSAC, UNSA, and Universidad de San Pablo, among others.
Pamela Antonioli, general manager of the Peruvian Mining Innovation Hub, stated that the aim of this new line of work is to assess participants’ potential and provide them with the necessary tools to develop all their talent.
“We are not assessing the viability of their ideas, but we hope that, once they are given these tools, they will be able to analyze their initial proposal—perhaps change it completely—and come up with a more structured concept,” she remarked.
Antonioli added that, based on this more structured concept, they may build a prototype, conduct proof-of-concept testing at laboratory scale, or do whatever is needed. Fifteen finalists will be shortlisted and announced at PERUMIN 36 in September 2023.
Those shortlisted will receive special training at a bootcamp in 2024, the year when the main event will take place in September. “I am sure that what is going to happen is that, even if they do not win, these fifteen young individuals who attend this bootcamp will acquire the knowledge all the same. And tomorrow they will be ready to take on challenges and propose this methodology. We will continue training people,” she said.
Pamela Antonioli commented that this program will last approximately two years, but the ultimate goal is to make it sustainable over time. “We would like the whole ecosystem to know that, if they have come up with innovations or want to be innovative in the mining sector, they have this opportunity coming their way,” she concluded.
About PERUMIN Hub
PERUMIN Hub is the main open innovation program in the country. It seeks solutions to the major challenges facing the mining sector through collaborative innovation. This 2023 edition will have the support of 23 mining companies and over 60 allies from 13 countries, including Peru.
This program was born from a partnership between the IIMP and the Innovation Hub, both institutions committed to tracing a path that will enable mining to position itself as a sector that innovates as a community and guides innovators, thus facilitating their growth, consolidation, and commercial takeoff in the mining sector.
