The Non-Profit Association WIM Peru (Women in Mining), the SNMPE (National Society of Mining, Oil and Energy) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) are preparing a study entitled "Identification of gaps and opportunities for gender equality in the Peruvian mining and energy sector", which will be presented at PERUMIN 36 in September 2023.
This was announced by Nahil Hirsh, President of SNMPE’s Diversity and Inclusion Working Group and Vice-President of WIM Peru, at the new edition of Rumbo a PERUMIN’s Conference Program, organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP).
“This study will show us where we are, what we are doing, and where we need to focus our actions. The results and experiences that we are going to obtain from this study will be important in the medium term," she said.
Nahil Hirsh noted that the study is financed by IDB and is being developed by Insuco, an independent international consulting firm specializing in science and social sustainability.
"Once completed, this study will have to be kept at, I suppose, due to its nature, the Ministry of Energy and Mines, but for that purpose we need the government to become more involved", she remarked.
In this regard, she called upon Minem to play a participatory role in reaching these objectives and to share updated data about the participation of women in Peruvian mining, for example, initiatives such as the Program “Mujeres Mágicas” (Magical Women).
"I would also like to take this opportunity to ask the companies from our Inclusion and Diversity Working Group to share their experiences so that we can figure out what we can apply and what we cannot" she added.
Nahil Hirsh emphasized that what is sought in the medium term is to guarantee that numbers from SNMPE’s member companies have an impact on their results and strategies for inclusion and diversity.
“And as an organization, we want this group to advance along these lines, and we also want the companies with the greatest progress to be able to collaborate with those with less progress", she concluded.
SNMPE’s Diversity and Inclusion Working Group was created in 2020 to share experiences and identify actions that require more partners to become involved. This group is made up of women and men committed to gender equality.
