The Pikimachay Patronage is implementing in Ayacucho a business model that seeks to positively impact biodiversity, the environment, farmers, and the entire value chain of local companies, and thereby reverse the situation of poverty (37%), illiteracy (26%) and anemia (48%) in the region.

During his presentation at Rumbo a PERUMIN – Consensuses for the Progress of Central Peru, Carlos Añaños, president of the Pikimachay Patronage, said that his organization's ultimate goal is to add value to Ayacucho through the projects it carries out in order to foster the well-being and comprehensive development of the Ayacucho people.

This business model is based on four pillars. The first consists in bringing craftsmanship and art closer together through a model of innovation, research, and design so that artisans can enhance their talent and produce works of art that are more than mere crafts. The region has sixteen traditional arts.

As part of the pillar Recognition of Ayacucho as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, joint work with local authorities has led to the region’s being included in the network of creative cities based on traditional art.

The third pillar has the Smart City concept, which strengthens unified coordination between regional government, municipalities, and serenazgo to improve public safety. This helped improve seventeen steps in just eleven months, making Ayacucho the fourth safest city in Peru, ranking higher than Cusco and Arequipa.

The last pillar is related to the Ayacucho brand model, for which the company Interbrand was hired. Prior to launching the brand, tests were successfully conducted in 80 countries, reaching 200 million people and 180 media outlets, and highlighting the value of a millenary history.

"This is how with this work, done jointly with various institutions, academia, and civil society, we managed to go from three flights per week in 2016 to seven daily flights in 2019, from 56,000 tourists to 300,000 tourists and have a more sustained tourism in the Ayacucho region," he said.

Carlos Añaños pointed out that the Pikimachay Patronage is also promoting the Tiyapuy business model, which aims to pay homage to the heroes of the countryside, who offer products without hormones, preservatives, or insecticides.

"It is time for all of us to come together and design a business model that we can all use. I invite you to go out there and look for opportunities; I am sure that in these forums we will find them. May it be a win-win situation for all Peruvians," he concluded.
