  • Creating corridors to integrate projects will enable us to cut costs in favor of economies of scale and higher productivity, said the former minister.

Building infrastructure comprehensively connected in the northern area of Peru is important for closing social gaps and improving rural population’s welfare.

This was pointed out by former Minister of Energy and Mines Jorge Merino Tafur during his presentation at the virtual event Rumbo a PERUMIN “Northern Macroregion Edition: Tumbes, Cajamarca, Piura, La Libertad, and Lambayeque – Competitiveness and Sustainability, A Task for All of Us.”

The speaker stated that the northern macroregion has significant mining and energy resources that can aid in fighting the effects of climate change.

“The north of Peru has important wind parks, such as Duna & Huambos, Sechura, Cupisnique, and Talara; as well as large-scale mining projects, such as Conga, La Granja, Michiquillay, and many more. If we integrate all the resources in this area, we can lead the country towards development while meeting global environmental standards,” he asserted.

He also stressed the importance of having a comprehensive logistics corridor to boost macroregional development. This proposal will enable us to provide rural areas with access to roads—hence to production, education, health, markets, and basic utility services—as well as create geographical clusters with technological innovation and sustainability.

Projects In Progress

According to the former minister of MINEM, one of the projects being proposed for implementation in the northern macroregion is the improvement of the port of Edén [sic], which is part of the Lambayeque – Cajamarca corridor. This project will help in the transportation of minerals; it has a potential export volume of six million concentrates a year.

With respect to this, he pointed out that “economic corridors that connect the Andes with the Pacific Ocean and the global market via modern ports should be included in a long-term Development Plan for the Regions or the Regional Commonwealths.”

Additionally, he highlighted the work being done in irrigation projects in the northern departments of Peru. “The production of fertilizers in Peru will enable us to increase agricultural productivity at a lower cost and with a timely supply,” he added.

Thus, he emphasized the important progress made in projects such as Alto Piura, located in Piura; Olmos, in Lambayeque; Chavimochic, in La Libertad; and Faical, in Tumbes.
