During PERUMIN 36, President of the Council of Ministers Alberto Otárola stated that between January and August 2023, they obtained environmental certifications for 37 mining exploration projects, with a total investment of over US$ 316 million. This figure represents a 37% increase compared to the amount obtained in the same period in 2022. He also shared the achievements in the regions resulting from ongoing mining operations.
“The transfers stemming from fiscal redistribution (canon minero), legal and contractual mining royalties, as well as rights of validity and penalties, amounted to over S/ 6.8 billion. The departments that received the largest amounts were Áncash, with S/ 1.682 billion, followed by Arequipa with S/ 1.047 billion, and Ica with S/ 896 million.”
The President of the Council of Ministers also mentioned the current administration’s efforts to streamline the certification process for mining projects.
“Our government is working diligently to improve the environmental regulations for mining exploration, with the purpose of enabling companies to simultaneously, rather than successively, process certifications and permits from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the National Water Authority, and the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation. This will result in a reduction of up to six months in the evaluation period, lower procedure costs for all the parties involved, and greater predictability in exploration timelines.”
Otárola also added that the Executive branch is working on transparency and constructive dialogue with various stakeholders, including local communities and mining companies, to ensure an environment conducive to investment and sustainable development.
Prime Minister Alberto Otárola then attended the “Business Luncheons” at PERUMIN 36. This event was held for the first time during the 2023 edition of the mining convention, bringing together specialists and officials in Arequipa.
Also attending the meeting on Tuesday, September 26, were the minister of energy and mines of Peru, Oscar Vera; the president of PERUMIN, Miguel Cardozo; the minister of the environment, Albina Ruiz; the regional governor of Arequipa, Rohel Sánchez; and the economic analyst and manager of Macroconsult, Gonzalo Tamayo.
