For the twelfth consecutive year, Compañía Minera Zafranal (CMZ) began the implementation of Participatory Environmental Monitoring (PEM) in the Project's area of influence. This year 2023, the monitoring was carried out on April 19 in Anexo Pedregal, a town located in the district of Uraca, province of Castilla, and on April 20 in the district of Lluta, in the province of Caylloma. Thirty-five representatives of authorities, civil society, irrigation water users' organizations, the private sector, women and youth from both jurisdictions, as well as from Huancarqui and Uraca in Castilla, participated in this participatory monitoring.
CMZ has been carrying out this MAP since 2011, executing two campaigns per year, where the evaluation of water, air, noise and hydrobiology components are considered. The first season corresponds to the wet season (rainy period) and the second to the dry season (absence of rain). To develop this program, the company hires an environmental consulting firm with a recognized track record and duly accredited by the National Quality Institute (INACAL) of the Ministry of Production.
The involvement of representatives of local people from the area of influence in the MAP allows for a transparent evaluation that builds confidence in the results obtained in a participatory manner. After sampling, CMZ conducts dissemination workshops to share the results obtained. So far, these results reflect the natural conditions of the environment considering also other current activities different from the mining project. This information is also provided to the municipalities in the areas of influence, and is available to the population at CMZ's Permanent Information Offices.
