Lima, OCTOBER 16 2023 Remediation of Liabilities Is Carried Out with 80% Local Workers

  • Activos Mineros is organizing sustainability forums to promote the recruitment of community members for environmental remediation work in various regions of Peru.

Of the total number of unskilled workers involved in the environmental remediation of mining liabilities in Peru, 80% are residents of communities near these projects.

This was confirmed to the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers by Dante Aguilar, the private investment manager of Activos Mineros SAC, who pointed out that remediation projects with the presence of local workers are a result of sustainability forums.

“Sustainability forums have allowed us to carry out a progressive activity, which is to get to know the surrounding communities, turn them into allies and generate benefits for them, such as the priority hiring of local workers," he said at PERUMIN 36.

An Example to the World

On the other hand, Dante Aguilar highlighted that Activos Mineros, a public company under Fonafe, is a global example of environmental remediation for other organizations engaged in the same activity, such as Wismut from Germany or Komir from South Korea.

Under this premise, he stressed that, in order to optimize the remediation of mining liabilities based on international best practices, the organization has signed agreements with the aforementioned counterparts for the transfer of knowledge and technologies.

“Our track record in environmental remediation, developed over more than fifteen years since 2006, has been well received by similar companies abroad, so we are strengthening ties with them to improve the quality of projects," the spokesperson said.

Investment Plan

Dante Aguilar also announced that in the next three years, until 2026, Activos Mineros plans to invest S/ 450 million in the implementation of 65 remediation projects involving almost 1,200 environmental liabilities in eleven regions of Peru.

Among the major projects, he highlighted Excelsior, a waste rock dump whose final closure is expected this year; Delta Upamayo, whose soils have been successfully neutralized and revegetated; and La Oroya, whose rural area has been restored mainly through tree planting.

“Of the total environmental liabilities, it is estimated that there are at least 4,000 orphaned mining environmental liabilities with no known responsible party; therefore, we are interested in forming an alliance with the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) and mining companies for the remediation of orphaned liabilities,” he added.
