Lima, FEBRUARY 16 2024 PERUMIN Hub: 27 Young people from five countries are competing for capital for their innovations

Pía Torres, manager of Innovation Hub, pointed out at the IIMP’s recent "Jueves Minero" that by the end of the year the winners of the "Young People Who Bring About Transformation" award will be announced. Eighteen of the participants are Peruvians.

Several mining companies have joined forces in PERUMIN HUB in a pioneering effort to address the challenges and opportunities in the Peruvian mining sector. PERUMIN HUB is an open innovation program in which the main companies of the Peruvian sector identify their challenges and opportunities.

PERUMIN Hub started in 2021, aimed at strengthening successful innovations in the mining sector; however, as of 2023, it broadened its scope to give young people from Peru and abroad the opportunity to develop initiatives that provide innovative solutions to the challenges of this industry.

“We Identify the challenges with the support of 23 mining companies that actively participate throughout the entire program. You will see all the different stages in which they had participated,” stated Pía Torres, manager of the Innovation Hub in the recent edition of “Jueves Minero”, organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP).

La preparación

It is worth mentioning that the program has the participation of students from universities and technical institutes in Peru, as well as from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador.

Torres explained that it all began with a comprehensive tour. The tour included discussions and characterization workshops. The goal was to involve a total of 3400 students over a period of 5 months.

The specialist said that the tour destinations covered several regions of the country, from Cajamarca to Puno, passing through La Libertad, Áncash, Lima, Huancavelica, Ayacucho, Arequipa, Moquegua, Tacna, Cusco, Apurímac, Pasco and Junín.

27 finalists

Of the 70 projects submitted, 27 young talents from 12 departments and 4 countries (Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador) were selected. The assessment of the proposals was carried out by the Technical Committee formed by representatives of PERUMIN Hub and MinSus, together with the review of the sector.

Subsequently, between April and October of 2024, a boot camp will be held providing an innovative immersive program for the selected young participants.

“It is an immersive program in which they will be given methodologies, mentoring, and guidance for the development of their ideas so that they can conceptually validate their proposals. The aim is to strengthen their innovation capabilities and above all, there will be a continuous approach with these 23 mining companies, which are supporting the program,” she highlighted.

An on-site award ceremony, recognizing outstanding achievements and contributions, will be held in October. The winning participant in each section, national and international, will receive an economic prize of US$ 5,000.

The PERUMIN Hub Program not only seeks to foster innovation but also to strengthen collaboration and synergy in the mining industry, thus setting the foundations for a more sustainable and developed future.
