Lima, FEBRUARY 16 2024 GIZ Agency joins PERUMIN Hub to internationalize young innovator’s program

This alliance allowed the “Young People Who Bring About Transformation” initiative to reach Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and Bolivia.

The PERUMIN Hub’s “Young People Who Bring About Transformation” line of work began its activities last year, with a national tour that invited students from universities and institutes to participate in this program that promotes the development of innovative ideas to address the main challenges of the mining sector. In addition, students from countries of the Andean region were invited thanks to the support of the project “Regional Cooperation for the Sustainable Management of Mining Resources in the Andean Countries” (MinSus).

“When we learned about PERUMIN Hub ‘Young People Who Bring About Transformation’, we realized that we share common purposes, and we have a great opportunity for Sinergy. Fortunately, there was the opportunity to connect with this proposal to expand this program so interesting for Peru to other countries of the region,” pointed out Evelyn Contreras, technical advisor of GIZ- MinSus Project.

Thanks to this alliance, the scope of this link between the mining sector and the Academia was enhanced in several countries, as well as the involvement of associations and companies, to promote the talent of young people and direct it to the optimization of the mining industry for the benefit of society.

“This approach is very valuable, the rapprochement between the Academia and the sector, but from a perspective of innovation and considering how to do a more modern, sustainable and environmentally friendly mining,” added the technical advisor of GIZ- MinSus Project.

For his part, the president of PERUMIN Hub, Rafael Estrada, considered that our country is an important reference in mining worldwide, therefore “we are fully convinced of what our young people, our Peruvian talent, can develop in our country for the sector. It clearly can be extended to the region or the world”.

It is in this way that the broad call for “Young People Who Bring About Transformation” received 70 applications in its two categories: for the national category, students from 12 regions of the country applied, and in the international category, submissions from Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador were received.

After the assessment of the initiatives by the Technical Committee of PERUMIN Hub and MinSus, as well as the evaluation of representatives of allied companies in the mining sector and the vote of the public attending PERUMIN 36 Mining Convention, 27 finalists were selected, 18 nationals and 9 foreigners.

The finalists will participate, this year, in an online boot camp, an immersive innovation program to be held between April and October. Lastly, in October, the awards ceremony will be held in the city of Lima, where the winner of each category will receive a prize of US$ 5,000 to boost their innovative idea.

It is also worth mentioning that this line of work is supported by 23 mining companies; 41 Institutes, universities, accelerators, and incubators; 19 national allies, and 31 international allies from 12 countries.
