In August 2022, Compañía Minera Condestable, a company part of the Peruvian group Southern Peaks Mining, achieved The Copper Mark certification, a prestigious certification awarded for the first time to a medium-sized mining and subway mining company.
The company underwent a major transformation, thanks to its efforts to become a benchmark in mining, focusing on its Innovation and Sustainability pillars. The certification assessed criteria associated with human rights, environmental, social, and corporate governance. This year, in compliance with the guidelines required by The Copper Mark in its annual review, the Condestable Mining unit demonstrated responsible production, aligned with contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and high international standards, which is why it was ratified in the certification.
Condestable is also the first mining company in Peru to work 100% with renewable energy since 2021 and is the first subway mine to employ electromobility, allowing it to reduce its carbon footprint through efficient energy use.
"The Copper Mark certification is evidence that we continue on the path of excellence that we set for ourselves to assume our role in the world's energy transition. Southern Peaks Mining Group employees are very proud of this achievement. We will continue to be committed to responsible copper production," said Adolfo Vera, CEO of Southern Peaks Mining.
The Copper Mark, the first certification developed for the copper extractive industry, assures all stakeholders that the company produces in an appropriate and sustainable manner.
Compañía Minera Condestable is a subway copper mine that has been operating for more than 60 years and currently processes 8,400 tons per day. It is located in Mala, just 1 hour from Lima, demonstrating that mining, agriculture, and development can work together.
