Lima, MAY 4 2023 Canada to be partner country of the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers in the development of PERUMIN 36th Mining Convention

  • The synergy with Canada will contribute to strengthening a shared vision towards a modern, competitive, sustainable and supportive mining industry, said IIMP president Abraham Chahuan.
  • The president of PERUMIN 36, Miguel Cardozo, highlighted Canada as a strategic partner for Peruvian mining, considering its mining investment portfolio in Peru, which amounts to more than $ 8.7 billion.

 

The Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP) will have Canada as a partner for the development of PERUMIN 36, the leading mining convention in Latin America and the world, to be held from September 25 to 29 at the Cerro Juli Convention Center in Arequipa, with the slogan "Investment generating wellbeing and sustainable development". This was announced by the president of IIMP, Abraham Chahuan, during a protocol event held at the Canadian Embassy Residence in Lima.

 

"We are sure that the expertise that Canada can contribute, at the government, business and academic levels, will contribute to strengthening the synergy and vision that we share for the development of a modern, competitive, sustainable and supportive mining industry," said Chahuan at the ceremony, which was attended by national, sectoral and regional authorities; representatives of companies in the mining sector and suppliers; academics and specialists.

During the ceremony, the Canadian Ambassador, Louis Marcotte, highlighted that both Canada and Peru are recognized as leading mining countries in the world. "This leadership comes with a responsibility that requires joint action for responsible and sustainable management of these valuable resources (...). Regarding PERUMIN, our planning is already underway. Many Canadian experts will be presenting on topics such as ESG factors, diversity and inclusion, rare earths, critical minerals, circular economy and sustainability, among others," said Marcotte.

CEOs of world mining companies confirm attendance at PERUMIN 36

During the ceremony, the president of PERUMIN 36, Miguel Cardozo, highlighted the foreign contribution to the development of the event, emphasizing the sharing of a mining tradition with Canada that allows them to share knowledge and exchange experiences for the benefit of the development of the industry. He also highlighted Canada as a strategic partner for Peruvian mining, considering its mining investment portfolio in the country, which amounts to more than $8.7 billion.

The president of PERUMIN 36 also announced that the CEOs of the world's leading mining companies have already confirmed their attendance and participation in the PERUMIN Mining Summit. Among them were Newmont CEO Tom Palmer, AngloAmerican CEO Duncan Wanblad, Antofagasta Minerals CEO Iván Arriagada, BHP President Rag Udd, Rio Tinto COO Clayton Walker, and others.  

Expectation of Authorities

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Energy and Mines, Oscar Vera, who highlighted PERUMIN as an opportunity to show the world the investment opportunities that Peru has in the mining sector. He also expressed the willingness of his portfolio, as part of the State, to be involved in the development of the event and in the discussion of issues of interest to the industry, among which he highlighted the streamlining of administrative processes for the execution of investments.

The governor of Arequipa, Rohel Sánchez, president of the National Assembly of Regional Governments, was also present and highlighted the importance of PERUMIN for the city of Arequipa and for the development of the mining industry in the country. He also stated that his administration will provide the necessary support for the organization of the event and to receive the thousands of convention attendees who will visit the region during the event.

During the ceremony, representatives of IIMP and the PERUMIN 36 Organizing Committee took the opportunity to express their appreciation to the economist Claudia Cooper and the Australian Ambassador, Maree Ringland, for their work and contribution to the development of PERUMIN 35 (to be held in 2022). Claudia Cooper was the president of this edition of the Mining Convention, while Australia participated as an allied country.
