Richard Sellschop, the global leader of mining technology at McKinsey, participated in the “Mining of the Future” forum at PERUMIN 36. He led the segment entitled Ultimate Mining: Realizing the Full Potential of People and Technology in Mining.
Richard Sellschop focused on the rapid and sustainable results delivered to clients in the metals and mining industry. His recent projects have revolved around digital transformation for multinational companies in metals, mining, and chemicals.
According to the data shared by McKinsey & Company's technology leader, the number of safety-related incidents in the Peruvian mines decreased by 78% from 2013 to 2022. He also explained how copper mining production increased by 85% from 2012 to 2022.
The Ultimate Mining presentation followed several proposals to optimize mining and improve processes in the face of climate change. Sellschop called for action to maximize technology for the benefit of those working in this industry at various stages of production.
"If we can eliminate accidents, achieve optimal metal recovery and equipment availability, minimize environmental impact, and maximize employee motivation, perhaps we can do it with optimal planning and specific mineral knowledge. How can we make the most of these tools? This is not just about people or technology. It is about a commitment to both," reflected Richard Sellschop.
He also emphasized making digitalization and analytics the new vision with the help of intelligent co-pilots for maintenance, widespread prediction, decision support, and field management optimization.
The “Mining of the Future” forum addressed topics such as climate change, mining countries critical to the energy transition, mining policy in the era of critical minerals, digital transformation, and sustainability.
