Vice-Minister of Mines highlighted that 75% of the 51 projects in the mining portfolio are copper-related, and that Peru will be able to meet the international demand.
The Vice-Minister of Mines, Henry Luna, stated that, unlike other countries, Peru produces more than eight metallic products. He mentioned this during his participation as a panelist at the latest Heading to PERUMIN conference entitled "Opportunities for the Comprehensive Development of Cajamarca," held at the National University of Cajamarca.
“When it comes to energy transition, critical elements are discussed. Peru has all of them. Unlike other countries, Peru produces more than eight metallic products. It has additional strategic elements such as lithium. In addition, we are studying the Eastern Andes with the Ingemmet team,” he said.
Under this premise, he confirmed that copper will be one of the key metals for the energy transition. He emphasized that in our portfolio of 51 projects valued at US$ 54 billion, 75% are copper projects, and in this way, Peru will be able to meet the demand of the international market.
“Cajamarca leads the portfolio with seven mining projects worth US$ 16.4 billion that can be developed in this region. These are projects that can be developed smoothly and should have the support of academia, universities, schools, chambers of commerce, and the farmers themselves,” he expressed.
In this regard, he highlighted the case of Michiquillay “which is advancing by leaps and bounds, and I believe it can probably be developed.” Regarding exploration initiatives, he pointed out that the most important project in the region is the Colpayoc project, which he said already meets all environmental standards and has all the necessary permits.
“This project has already passed all the filters and could easily be developed. Let us leave behind the anti-development myths and make Cajamarca a new cradle of national development,” he concluded.
