During the first PERUMIN Jóvenes event, he said that the country needs specialized mining professionals and technicians to accelerate the project pipeline.
At the first PERUMIN Jóvenes event, Felipe Valencia Dongo, a principal partner at Grupo Estrategia, moderated the panel titled “New Leadership Models in Mining.”
He emphasized the importance of engaging young people to accelerate and bring to life more than 51 mining projects valued at more than $54 billion.
“For mining to thrive, we need more geologists, more mining engineers, and more specialized technicians, because while projects may eventually overcome obstacles, we will lack the necessary human capital,” he noted.
Valencia Dongo added that new generations will play a key role in meeting the growing demand for copper in the future.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Peru has 31 copper projects valued at $39.8 billion. Copper is one of the essential minerals for the energy transition.
“Global demand for copper is expected to continue growing significantly in the coming decades, so new generations will be largely responsible for meeting that demand,” he said during his presentation at the first PERUMIN Jóvenes event, organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP).
He added that Peru is and will continue to be a key player in the energy transition, emphasizing that the new generations will be involved not only in the sustainability of mining projects but also in global sustainability.
Finally, he pointed out that the current generation of young Peruvians has a critical role to play in the world’s energy transition and in achieving climate change goals. “The world expects a lot from us, and we must rise to the occasion,” he said.
