Lima, JUNE 15 2022 Rumbo A Perumin Analyzes Territorial Development Opportunities In Southern Regions
- On the first day of this round of conferences, mining investment opportunities in the regions of Apurímac, Cusco and Puno will be analyzed.
- Mining’s contribution to the development of road infrastructure and the improvement of the human development index will also be discussed
Lima, June 15, 2022. As part of its agenda, the decentralized event Rumbo a PERUMIN will devote some sessions to analyzing and discussing the regions of the southern mining corridor, which includes Apurímac, Cusco, Puno, Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna. The objective is to identify development opportunities in mining and to maximize the extractive industry’s impact on the population of these regions.
There will be six free virtual sessions featuring State authorities and officials, representatives of private companies, scholars, and specialists, as well as union leaders. The sessions will take place every Thursday, as part of the traditional “Mining Thursday”—an event organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP), this time in alliance with PERUMIN 35’s executive committee—and will be livestreamed via PERUMIN’s platforms.
“The high levels of social unrest we are experiencing are concerning. We have witnessed violent situations in Las Bambas, Cuajone, and the Los Chancas mining project. For that reason, it is vital for the different actors involved in the country’s development to be able to discuss and exchange ideas to maximize the impact of the important benefits the industry offers in favor of social and territorial development,” said Miguel Cardozo, engineer and president of Rumbo a PERUMIN.
Governor of Apurimac to take part in the first session
During the first session of Rumbo a PERUMIN, this Thursday, June 16, a study entitled “Socio-economic impact of mining in the Apurímac-Cusco-Puno corridor from both a historical and a future perspective,” conducted by the Center for Competitiveness and Development (CCD), will be presented. The session includes a panel discussion to analyze the development opportunities the industry offers these regions. This panel will feature Baltazar Lantarón, governor of Apurimac; Mauricio Rodriguez, former governor of Puno; and journalist Pau Pilco.
The following sessions will also analyze the opportunities the industry offers for developing regional infrastructure (June 23) and improving human development index values (June 30.), with lectures by Gabriel Daly, former general director of the General Directorate of Private Investment at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and Francisco Santa Cruz, coordinator of human development index reports (UNDP) in Peru, respectively. Likewise, the sessions to be held on July 7, 14 and 21 will address the same topics related to sustainable development, but with a focus on the regions of Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna.
