The founding partner of Macroconsult pointed out that there is a lower non-monetary poverty rate and a reduction in anemia rates in areas with mining presence.

The founding partner of Macroconsult, Gonzalo Tamayo, stated that family incomes have grown steadily in zones with a mining presence. This was expressed in his presentation “Economical impact of mining in the past 20 years,” which was part of the conference series of Heading to PERUMIN.

“Family incomes have grown steadily. The longer there is mining, the better the results,” he pointed out. He also pointed out that, due to the sales of companies in mining areas, there has been an improvement in the well-being of families, measured in both monetary and non-monetary terms.

Tamayo added that there is a lower non-monetary poverty rate and a reduction in anemia rates in areas with mining presence. The Macroconsult partner also stated that household economies in mining areas recovered more quickly from the effects of the pandemic.

In this regard, Tamayo mentioned that the sectors with the most significant changes are commerce and services, with an average annual increase in their sales of S/ 1.3 million and S/ 1 million, respectively. Another important fact that the specialist highlighted is that the companies in mining areas sell S/ 1.6 million more than companies in non-mining areas.

More employment

At another point in his presentation, the expert mentioned that companies in mining areas have created more jobs by hiring permanent staff.

“The business development generated by mining has not only increased the sales and employment of companies but has also improved productivity level (sales/employee) by S/ 250 thousand per employee,” he expressed.

Under this premise, he explained that, unlike companies in non-mining areas, companies in mining districts are identified to have almost ten more employees in total and six additional permanent employees.
