ÁNCASH, OCTOBER 28 2021 Rumbo a PERUMIN seeks to contribute to the creation of institutions in the regions

  • On October 27 and 28, Ancash hosted a new decentralized event organized by Rumbo a PERUMIN.

During the closing ceremony of the "Territorial Development and Mining in Ancash" conference, the president of Rumbo a PERUMIN, Miguel Cardozo, highlighted the importance of having spaces for dialogue, such as those on October 27 and 28, organized in this region located in the north of Peru.

"We hope that this event has served not only to identify the main potential of Ancash, but also to emphasize that it is necessary to implement long-term policies for the mining sector," he said.

He also pointed out that one of the main conclusions of the event -organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers and the Executive Committee of PERUMIN 35- is that the first step to enable a competitive territorial environment is to generate a true institutional framework between the State, the community, and the private sector within the same territory.

"One of the main objectives we have as the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers – proven by events such as this one - is precisely to create the institutional framework that is lacking in our country and that will allow us to develop our full potential," he stressed.

Mining and its contribution

On the other hand, Miguel Cardozo recalled that according to the "Benefits generated by mining in the Ancash region" study, prepared by the Center for Competitiveness and Development (CCD), the execution of new mining projects in Ancash (with a portfolio valued at more than US$ 1.2 billion) will reduce the poverty rate to 9.7% by 2031; that is, a reduction of more than 15 percentage points.

"In addition to Antamina, which contribution has become evident, this important region has important projects such as Magistral -of which we had an excellent presentation-, Pachapaqui Expansion, San Luis and Hilarion, among others, which will be essential for the future of Ancash," he said.

He also emphasized that the mining industry can participate in an agenda focused on the territorial development of the country.

"We are convinced that mining - as a catalyst for development - can facilitate this journey, since it not only articulates with various economic corridors, but can also create greater productive linkages at the regional level," he said.

About PERUMIN

PERUMIN is the most important mining event in Latin America and is considered the second most important mining event worldwide, which, together with the importance our country holds as a producer of various metals, has positioned Peru as a meeting point for the mining industry. This is due to its high level of attendance, involving international delegations, government authorities, company representatives, professionals and technicians of the sector, members of academia, among others. Rumbo a PERUMIN establishes a program of activities for the 35th edition of the Mining Convention, which is scheduled to take place in September 2022.
