LIMA, MAY 26 2021 Presentation of a circular economy project that would solve the problem of anemia and malnutrition in Peru

The Peruvian specialist Carlos Villachica León, researcher at the Smallvill company, presented the HEVA Project (Electric Vacuum Furnace), a proposal based on circular economy, which focuses on the integration of the mining, lime and cement industries with agriculture and aquaculture.

This was announced in the framework of Heading to PERUMIN, a space for open and decentralized debate organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP), this edition being called "Mining: sustainability, economic impact and electoral proposals"

Villachica explained that this initiative increases mining, industrial, agricultural and aquaculture productivity. In the case of these last two sectors, if applied on a massive scale in the highlands - where there is CO2 deficiency and high levels of poverty and malnutrition - they would be highly profitable and sustainable.

"The application of HEVA technology to mass-produce quality lime and CO2 would boost food productivity in the highlands, solving the problem of malnutrition, anemia and poverty in the short term and eliminating a major source of greenhouse gas emissions" , said the expert.

He added that each year Peruvian mining consumes more than 2.5 million tons of lime that generates 4 million tons of CO2 emissions, which are harmful to the climate and are not used.

In this regard, Villachica stressed that the change to HEVA technology would gradually recover 2.0 million tons of CO2, which could be used to strengthen Andean crops, and food production in general.

He pointed out that in general terms, with this mass of CO2, 0.8 million tons of microalgae (Spirulina) could be produced, which is the food of the future proposed by the UN, FAO and WHO. This would be enough to feed 60 million people each year, and would put an end to anemia and child malnutrition.
