Lima, MAY 3 2022 Governor of Pasco: “We are aware that mining is the main driving force of our economy”

The regional governing of Pasco, Pedro Ubaldo Polinar, expressed his support to the Peruvian mining activity, which he considered as the main force of the economic growth and financing source for the progress of this region, located in the central area of Peru.

“As the Regional Government (GORE) of Pasco, we are aware that mining activity is the main driving force of our economy. This is shown by the INEI in its 2021 annual report, which tells us that mining accounts for 53% of our regional GDP”, he stated during the inauguration of Rumbo a PERUMIN, Central Peru Edition.

This important economic contribution was possible thanks to the greater mining investments made in 2021, which surpassed by 75% those made in 2020, accumulating more than US$ 153’835,000, he added.

He further added that as a result of the fiscal redistribution (canon minero) royalties and validity rights collected, Pasco received S/ 61 million from mining in 2021, which helped strengthen the social and productive development programs.

“Nevertheless, we are aware that poverty and social dissatisfaction persist. The MEF observes that poverty in the region exceeds 40%, while the Ombudsman’s Office states that there are 6 active conflicts as at March”, he pointed out.

In this regard, he mentioned that the department of Pasco closed the year 2021 with a budgetary execution in public investment projects of 59% at regional government level and 61.7% at local governments level.

In addition, the regional Government announced recently the disbursement of S/ 45 million in projects involving roads, sidewalks and bridges, water and sewerage, implementation of health centers, expansion of infrastructure, etc., with which they trust they will surpass the investment executed the previous year.

“In this challenge that represents providing our region and communities with the benefits in our reach, we are committed to the generation of synergies with the mining sector to develop projects in different lines of activity for social well-being”, he noted.

Thus, he commented that he trusts that this edition of Rumbo a PERUMIN will be appropriate to find joint solutions with the government, companies and civil society, to offer the regions in central Peru a greater social and economic progress.

Consensus for the progress of Peru

Previously, the President of Rumbo a PERUMIN, Miguel Cardozo, talked about the social conflicts that are affecting the normal performance of important mining operations in the country, which will have a direct impact on the economy of the region and of the country this year 2022, as there will be less employment, less productive chains and less fiscal contributions.

“We must definitely create consensus in the country for the sustainable development of the mining industry. Therefore, we find it relevant that this event takes place under the slogan: Consensus for the progress of Central Peru”.

Rumbo a PERUMIN, Central Peru Edition, will take place from the 3rd to the 5th of May, 2022 through a virtual platform. It is a prelude to PERUMIN 35th Mining Convention, an event organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP) which will be held from the 26th to the 30th of September, on-site, in the White City of Arequipa.
