Lima, JULY 15 2022 BHP: Social Value to build a better world

With the purpose of bringing people and resources together to build a greater world, BHP activity does not only focus on creating financial value, but fundamentally on the positive contribution it may generate. With presence in 90 locations around the world and over 80,000 workers, BHP is the world’s largest natural resources company.

BHP operations have a key role in society. They focus on the production of essential raw materials that the world needs to decarbonate, make progress on energy transition, and grow in a sustainable fashion: copper for renewable energies, nickel for electric cars, potash for sustainable farming development, iron ore and metallurgic carbon for production of steel required for global infrastructure.

Social Value is then BHP’s positive contribution to society – workers, partners, local economy, environment and communities. It is about creating mutual and lasting benefit. Social Value is the way BHP does mining.

The company has recently updated their Social Value goals, setting specific commitments and investments in those areas with the biggest impact: decarbonization, environment, alliances with indigenous peoples; safe and inclusive workforce prepared for the future, thriving and empowered communities; and responsible supply chains.

This way the company set ambitious goals towards 2030, among them, a 30% reduction of greenhouse effect gases in our operations, and the announcement of a US$4 billion investment up to the end of the decade to progress in reducing emissions, protecting biodiversity and rehabilitating or preserving 30% of 6 million hectares that BHP owns or manages.

Social Value is already implemented in Perú through BHP Explorations teamwork in the lands of Apurimac, Huancavelica, Ayacucho, Arequipa, Pasco and Moquegua.
