Arequipa, JULY 7 2022 Double celebration in Arequipa: PERUMIN returns and Melgar qualifies

This Thursday, the more than 1,280,000 people living in Arequipa awoke to two excellent pieces of news. The first was that the region will host for the fourteenth consecutive time the most important mining convention in Latin America, PERUMIN, at the Cerro Juli Convention Center, from September 26 to 30.

Claudia Cooper, economist and president of PERUMIN 35, underlined that the mining event will attract more than 50,000 people, including entrepreneurs, authorities, professionals, and students, who will be able to attend the Mining Summit, the International Meeting, the TIS Forum, EXTEMIN, PERUMIN Hub, and PERUMIN Inspira.

“We will have a varied program with an environmental and inclusive approach. Thus, we will analyze the challenges the industry faces in terms of diversity and inclusion, we will address an agenda around the role of the energy sector within mining, and, finally, we will talk about water, climate change, and mining,” added Cooper.

On the other hand, Víctor Gobitz, engineer and former president of the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers, highlighted this edition’s slogan, “Building together a greater Peru”, whereby they seek to reach consensus among the different actors of the mining ecosystem in order to create proposals in favor of the socio-economic development of the country.

“It is gratifying to have PERUMIN back in Arequipa again, after 3 years of absence. We are sure that this event will allow us to promote and show the world the opportunities our country has for socio-economic development, with mining by its side, as one of its major productive activities,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, Luis Caballero, president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Arequipa, underscored the impact that this world-class mining event will have on the recovery of Arequipa’s hospitality industry, which will bring in the substantial sum of US$ 30 million to the department’s economy.

 Melgar’s feat

The second piece of news was the recent qualification of Melgar FBC to the quarter finals of the South American Cup. Playing good soccer and largely dominating possession, they beat Deportivo Cali 2-1 at UNAS’s Monumental Stadium, with masterful goals by Argentine striker Bernardo Cuesta at minutes 58 and 73 of the second half.

Next, Melgar will face the historic Carioca team Internacional, which won this competition in 2008. The first match will be played in Arequipa on August 3, and the second match will be in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on August 10. Their local following are eagerly waiting for tickets to go on sale in order to keep supporting their team.

Finally, as a token of appreciation for the great welcome PERUMIN gets in Arequipa, and as a sign of support to the city’s traditional soccer team, Claudia Cooper did not hesitate to wear Melgar’s jersey shirt and wish them great success in the South American Cup, during the launch of the mining convention at Cerro Juli.
