In a ceremony held yesterday at the auditorium of the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP), the twelve winners of the 2024 edition of the National School Mining Award—which received more than 240 entries from 15 regions of the country–were announced. Participants competed in four categories: Short Story, Theater performances, Scale Modeling, and Social and Environmental Responsibility in Action, to promote knowledge and reflection on formal mining and its impact on society.

Each participating team was composed of a student, a teacher advisor, and the principal of the educational institution. During the awards ceremony, the participation of three teams that presented their work in Quechua was highlighted. These teams were from Cajamarca, Arequipa, and Puno.

Tomás Gonzáles, president of the National School Mining Award, was in charge of the words of honor during the award ceremony, thanking the contestants and highlighting the efforts of each one of them.

“Part of the objective of this award is for each of the children who participate to gain a better understanding of formal mining. One can see, in many of the entries, that they understand how important mining is for Peru. What we need to do is to continue working so that children have more opportunities,” he said.

The prizes for the first places in each category were a check for S/ 5,000 for the educational institution and laptops for the student and teacher. Second-place winners received S/ 4,000 and notebooks, while third-place winners received S/ 3,000 and tablets.
