The president of PERUMIN 37 stressed the need for new regulations to advance the formalization of mining.

Jimena Sologuren, president of the Organizing Committee of PERUMIN 37, the mining convention organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP), insisted on the need to not extend the Comprehensive Mining Formalization Registry (Reinfo) and to advance the approval of an Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Law (ASM).

It is important that the new ASM law be debated in Congress so that we can put an end, once and for all, to Reinfo, which has caused so much harm to our country, continues to impact ongoing projects, and jeopardizes those that are yet to be developed," she stated from Australia to the Regional Communication Network (RCR).

She also mentioned the need for the new Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) law to facilitate the formalization of small-scale artisanal miners, while also incorporating on-site verification and monitoring to ensure compliance with labor and environmental regulations.

"We recognize that artisanal and small-scale miners are an important workforce and contribute to the country's economy; however, it is crucial that this be done in an orderly manner, respecting the minimum standards we need for the environment, worker safety, and above all, for decent work. We cannot compromise on these issues," she said.

On the other hand, she pointed out some positive news in the mining sector, such as the progress of the Tía María mining project. "I believe there is still room for improvement, but the signals are positive," she added.

Great Interest in PERUMIN 37

Jimena Sologuren, president of PERUMIN 37, noted significant progress in preparations for the mining convention organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers, set to take place from September 22 to 26, 2025, in Arequipa.

'We are very pleased with the positive response we’ve received, especially in areas like the sale of stands at EXTEMIN (the Mining Technology Exhibition). There has been strong interest from countries and embassies in being part of this major event that puts Peru in the spotlight,” she emphasized.

Peruvian Delegation Participates in IMARC 2024 in Australia

Sologuren spoke from Sydney, Australia, where a Peruvian delegation consisting of 30 people is attending the 16th International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC 2024), which runs until October 31.

Jimena Sologuren mentioned that the Peruvian delegation includes the Minister of Energy and Mines, Rómulo Mucho; the Minister of Economy, José Arista; as well as businesspeople and public officials. She added that their goal at the event is to position Peru as a strategic mining destination at one of the most important mining summits in the world.
