Public and private schools nationwide can win prizes of up to PEN 5,000 and laptops for their winning students and teachers.
The Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP by its spanish initials), supported by the Professional School of Mining Engineers from the Universidad Católica de Santa María of Arequipa, will conduct the contest for obtaining the National School Mining Award. This year, the contest is part of the prior activities for PERUMIN 37 Mining Convention. Thus, the IIMP invites all public or private schools nationwide to participate.
“The Organizing Committee of PERUMIN 37 is already working for the Convention to be held next year. For us, one of the most important activities is to work with the youth, in this case with the schoolchildren who are the country's future. They should know what formal and responsible mining is; and, how it brings sustainable development to our country,” Tomás Gonzales, president of the National School Mining Award said.
The contest has four categories related to the presentation of artistic works that highlight the importance of mining within the children’s communities and regions, and its contribution to the development and future of the country.
From 1st to 3rd grade of Elementary school, participants should present a short story; from 4th to 6th grade, a video recording of a theatre performance; from 1st to 3rd grade of Secondary school, they should present a scale model; and from 4th to 5th grade of Secondary school, they must submit a documented Social and Environmental Responsibility work. It is worth noting that works can be submitted in Spanish or Quechua.
