NEWS, INTERVIEWS AND EVERYTHING RELATED TO PERUMIN IN THE MEDIA

In the keynote address "Impact of mining on the southern region", held on the first day of the event "Southern Mining Corridor: Challenges for the Development of the Regions", the importance of dialogue and consensus between mining companies, the State and the populations located in the areas of direct influence of the mining units was highlighted.

In order to learn more about this relationship strategy, the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers convened three mining companies to share their experiences with the communities, within the framework of the decentralized Heading to PERUMIN.

The first mining company to participate was Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC), which presented its actions in education in regions such as Moquegua and Tacna, within the framework of the decentralized Heading to PERUMIN.

"The educational strengthening in Moquegua has been successful due to the continuity on the part of the authorities and on the part of Southern that has allocated a direct investment or through the Works for Taxes mechanism", informed the Superintendent of Public Relations of Southern Peru, Guillermo Vidalón.

He also said that in the case of Michiquillay - a mining project that is not yet in the production phase - the mining company has been training the residents in the production of yogurt. "Cajamarca is a dairy area and that is why we need the local farmer to learn how his product can last longer and generate additional added value," he commented.

The Virtuous Water Circle

For its part, Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde described the work aimed at improving water quality, which was carried out through the construction of dams (Pillones, Bamputañe and a small one called San José de Uzuña), and a drinking water plant which benefited 350,000 people who previously did not have this basic service.

Similarly, Cerro Verde’s Public Affairs and Community Relations manager, Pablo Alcázar mentioned that another project was the construction of the Enlozada Wastewater Treatment Plant, which required an investment of USD 500 million and has made it possible to treat 96% of the wastewater of Metropolitan Arequipa.

“This has made it possible to recover the Chili River and has even allowed agricultural development due to quality water; we also expect an impact on the tourism sector. This is what the virtuous water circle is all about ”, underlined Pablo Alcázar.

Roofing of the Uchusuma channel

The third case presented was the roofing of the Uchusuma channel, carried out by the mining company Minsur in the Tacna region.

According to Minsur’s Director of Internal Affairs, Gonzalo Quijandría, despite there being no risks of contamination of the canal, the Regional Government of Tacna and Minsur agreed to cover it in order to mitigate the perceptions of certain sectors of the population.

"The operations of the Pucamarca gold mine began in 2013 and eight years later it continues to operate without having had any social conflict," said Gonzalo Quijandría.
