  • UNSA received PEN 73.7 million as fiscal redistribution (canon) and royalties from the mining industry

At Rumbo a PERUMIN 35, Dr. Hugo Rojas, rector of Universidad Nacional de San Agustín, said that the university needs approximately PEN 220 million to improve the equipment and infrastructure of the Science and Technology Park of Arequipa, though this investment is to be disbursed progressively over the next years.

At the conference entitled “Socio-economic impact of mining in Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna,” he emphasized that this modern center of scientific studies has contributed to research, innovation, development, and technological exchange. It has also helped improve the productivity and competitiveness of companies, and it has added value to the natural resources of the southern departments.

All of this was possible thanks to the fiscal redistribution and mining royalty transfers allocated to the different government levels and higher education schools of Arequipa. For instance, according to rector Rojas, UNSA gets 20% of the total contribution, and spends half of it on research work, and the rest on investment projects, which was authorized by ….as of 2021.

“From 2017 to 2021, mining transfers to our university climbed from PEN 26 million to PEN 73.7 million, respectively, which has had a positive impact on the increase in the number of research projects conducted by our professionals and has, thereby, helped us become the sixth best university in Peru and one of the most important in Latin America,” he said.

He also underlined that, owing to the increase in economic resources the university receives from mining, they now have 160 researchers registered at Renacyt and modern laboratories equipped with electronic microscopes which are available to mining and local companies to conduct highly complex research studies.

“Over the last 5 years, the buildings of our Accounting, Business Administration, and Public Relations Schools have been upgraded. In addition, a research building will soon be built for the Engineering School, with an investment of PEN 45 million through the Works for Taxes modality, by Southern Peru,” he pointed out.

 Education is key

On the other hand, Hugo Rojas added that every public project supported by the mining sector must always focus on people’s well-being, which means that the money must be allocated efficiently and responsibly by officials who are aware of the reality of their region and who are committed to doing impeccable management work, free of any kind of corruption.

“Education is the only resource to build good citizens. And, as a university, we are fully committed to offering first-class education to our thousands of students, who will be the next generation that will continue leading Arequipa down the road to growth and social and economic development,” he stated.
