Arequipa, JULY 6 2022 Perumin 35: Arequipa Is Getting Ready For The Most Important Convention In Latin America

  • The Mining Convention will bring in over PEN 80 million for the region through the recovery of the hospitality industry
  • From September 26 to 30, PERUMIN 35 expects to receive 50,000 attendees

The Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP) announced that it has been making the necessary arrangements and work for the return of the PERUMIN Mining Convention. With an in-person format, the event’s 35th edition will take place from September 26 to 30 at the Cerro Juli Convention Center, in Arequipa.

The organizing committee, presided by Claudia Cooper, informed that 50,000 people are expected to attend, including entrepreneurial leaders, investors, authorities, public officials, professionals, and students, which is to generate more than PEN 80 million for the region through the recovery of the hospitality industry.

The event will have an environmental and inclusive approach. Any potential environmental impacts will be minimized through CO2 measurements, making it a zero-carbon footprint event. Additionally, the event will offer simultaneous translation of the lectures into Spanish, English, and Quechua, thus being the first time that the mining convention is held in three languages.

With the slogan “Building together a greater Peru”, this year’s edition will be the first to be held in-person since 2019 and will be developed adhering to all the necessary safety protocols. It will also be the 14th time Arequipa hosts PERUMIN, owing to its well-established mining tradition and significant copper production.

“"It is gratifying to hold PERUMIN again, after 3 years, in such an important place for Peruvian mining as Arequipa. We are convinced that this event will allow us to promote and show the world the opportunities our country has for socio-economic development,” said Víctor Gobitz, member of the executive committee and former president of the IIMP.

Extensive program of activities

Claudia Cooper, president of the organizing committee, highlighted that PERUMIN 35 will offer a wide range of activities that attendees will be able to enjoy during the mining convention. For instance, the Mining Summit is a very relevant space within the event, where the topics that set the agenda of the mining industry will be discussed.

She also confirmed the organization of the International Meeting, a space whose program addresses the latest trends within the sector, such as innovation, sustainability, governance, diversity, and inclusion, among others, and which will be attended by delegations from Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Sweden, among other invited countries.

The Mining Convention will also include the Technology, Innovation, and Sustainability Forum (TIS Forum), which has received 516 technical works from which the winner of the National Mining Award, the industry’s highest award, will be chosen. There will also be the Technological and Mining Exhibition Fair (EXTEMIN), where 800 companies and institutions will showcase and present their ideas and projects relating the sector.

Another activity to take place is PERUMIN Inspira, which will recognize entrepreneurs with startups working at over 2,000 m.a.s.l. towards the development of communities located in high Anrector regions. Finally, there is PERUMIN Hub, the most important open and collaborative innovation program, which will acknowledge innovations that provide solutions to the great challenges facing the sector.

“PERUMIN 35 will have a varied program with an environmental and inclusive approach. Thus, in this edition, we will analyze the challenges that the industry faces in terms of diversity and inclusion, we will address an agenda around the role of the energy sector within mining, and, finally, we will talk about water, climate change, and mining,” added Cooper.
